A LIFE FOR STRADIVARI
Simone Fernando Sacconi
in collaboration with the Committee for the 50th anniversary of Simone Fernando Sacconi’s death
curated by Fausto Cacciatori
With an exhibition, a study day, recitals and meetings, the Museo del Violino, in collaboration with a Committee promoted by Wanna Zambelli and Marco Vinicio Bissolotti, recalls, on the fiftieth anniversary of his death, the figure and work of Simone Fernando Sacconi (May 30, 1895 Rome – June 26, 1973 Point Lookout, New York). Trained very young with the luthier Giuseppe Rossi, then in Palermo for military service in 1918-20, he worked with Giuseppe Sgarbi and, back in Rome, he attended Giuseppe Fiorini’s workshop. In 1931 he began working for Emil Herrmann in New York.
From that moment he returned frequently to Italy and above all to Cremona, consolidating a relationship with the city that began in 1937.
On the occasion of the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of Stradivari’s death, Sacconi was one of the members of the commission examining historical instruments and deserved a gold medal in the Modern Violin Making Competition. He was also offered the direction of the School of Violin Making, an invitation which he declined, preferring to continue working in New York.
From 1951, he worked in New York with Rembert Wurlitzer, owner of the most important antique instruments restoration and appraisal house in the United States: he repaired and restored a very large number of Italian violin making masterpieces, collaborating above all with great musicians of his time.
From the end of the 1950s he spent long periods in Cremona. From 1966-68 he taught restoration and construction techniques at the School of Violin Making, as an expert. In 1972, after long years of research, he published The “secrets” of Stradivari, reconstructing the construction method of the great Cremonese luthier. The publication includes the inventory of the Stradivarian artefacts, the result of the work of reorganizing this rich heritage, which formed the basis for the layout of the Stradivarian Museum. The bond with Cremona was officially sanctioned in 1972 when he was awarded honorary citizenship.
“It is a happy day, this one, because it brought maestro Sacconi even closer to Stradivari.” This was the final speech by the then director of the Civic Museum, Alfredo Puerari
